SONJA LEE BAND
Riding high on the release of their first CD, Telling It Like It Is, The Sonja Lee Band is gaining momentum and gathering fans nationwide. Sonja Lee is one of the Northwest’s most powerful voices, and her band delivers a polished mix of jazz-flavored blues.
Sonja Lee’s singing can be both sweet and powerful, a mixture of Etta James, Joan Osborne, Diana Krall, with maybe a little Janis Joplin thrown in to sharpen the edge.
“Blues songstress Sonja Lee has a voice that ranges from passionate and earthy fire to fun-loving teases. From playful tunes like "He's a Tramp" to the vibrant "I'm Feeling Alright," Sonja is bound to bring down the house and get her audience up and dancing.” - Margaret Bikman, The Bellingham Herald.
“Lee is a new artist with an amazing voice that captures and expresses all the nuances and inflections of seasoned Jazz and Blues singers from bygone eras who didn’t have the studio gimmicks and gadgetry overused by many vocalists today.” - Daryl Davis, Artistic Director, Port Townsend Acoustic Blues Festival
Sonja’s smoky vocals are backed by a combination of veteran musicians and astounding young talent. Robert Goldtooth Ray on upright bass has played for more than 45 years. He is a master of his craft, adding a uniquely mellow flavor with the big bass. Grant Wilson is another seasoned musician who has played drums pretty much since birth, anchoring the solid rhythm section.
The others are much younger, each gifted with remarkable talent and classically trained. Thomas Harris blows a smooth, sultry sax, adding tremendous emotional depth to the music while Matthew Ray van den Heuvel calmly cranks out incredible riffs on the guitar.
