Blues Union is a soulful groove machine led by B-3 Organist and Blues Vocalist John Carswell.

It’s Carswell’s incredible blues vocals that set him apart from those who claim to play the blues. He loves the good times and he loves to make you smile doing what he does best.

Bass player, Larry Holloway, quips: “that guy’s got more soul than James Brown.”

Over the course of his forty-year career, Carswell has played with Blues and R&B legends B.B. King, Aretha Franklin, Tower of Power, and Ray Charles.

Residing now in the Northwest he works between Seattle and Bellingham as frequently as the clubs can book him. Locally, he has performed at Resort Semiahmoo, Poppe’s Bistro, Skagit Valley Resort, and for the Jazz Project’s Art of Jazz Series.

The band is filled out by Judd Sherwood on drums who performs regularly throughout the Northwest with his own groups and by carefully assembling players from around the region to play jazz in concert and at clubs. He has performed with Herb Ellis, Bill Perkins, Teddy Edwards, John Stowell, Bert Wilson, and Nancy King. He founded The Jazz Project in February 1997 to increase performance opportunities for Jazz Musicians and to promote the music from a musician’s perspective of community development and education. He has received eight consecutive grants from Washington State Arts Commission.

Performing together for decades, the Stilly River Band delivers an exciting range of music, from bluegrass to progressive folk, Latin, Irish, rock and rhythm 'n blues. Their bluegrass arrangement of Sam & Dave's soul classic, Hold On, I'm Comin' will put a smile on your face for the rest of the day.

Known by some as “the bad boys of bluegrass”, the Stillys play and eclectic mix of music from traditional bluegrass to other less conventional styles played in a bluegrass format that the band labels “rude grass.”

The band features John Amber-Oliver on lead vocals and guitar, Jonathon Schneider on tenor harmonies and banjo, Stuart Torgeson on dobro and accordion, John Daugherty on vocals and stand up bass, Steve Stolpe on vocals and mandolin and Mike Schway on fiddle.

The Stilly River Band delivers accomplished musicianship, excellent vocal harmony and an always entertaining and unpredictable show. Looking for a cross between Earl Scruggs and the Tempations? These are your guys!

Seattle guitarist and singer Chris Stevens has been a favorite of Northwest blues fans for many years. His intense playing calls the prime years of stellar guitarists like B.B. King, T-Bone Walker and Kenny Burrell to mind. Preferring to deliver his electric blues lines with the rich tones of a big Gibson archtop, Chris combines scorching blues feeling with dazzling chops and constantly surprising musical ideas to create a style that cuts across genres, including blues, jazz... and surf!

Taking their unusual name from a song title by legendary blues guitarist Freddy King, the Surf Monkeys keep a firm footing in the blues while stretching the boundries with ultra cool spy themes, reverb drenched surf twang and Chris’ own “blues on the edge of jazz” originals. The Surf Monkeys truly are the missing link!

The Ben Rice Trio has been described by outsiders as Rockabilly, Swamp Rock, and Soul infused Country. Ben himself says the band’s music is the kitchen sink of Blues mixed with his band mate’s influences of Punk, Hip-Hop, and Classic Rock.

Their sound is molded by the instruments they yield. Ben playing a dobro, lap steel, and the infamous cigar box guitar. While his brother and bassist Tommy Rice plays a large bodied upright bass. These throwback and vintage voiced instruments are supported by Ryan Rustrum’s big drum sound that creates a fresh yet true to its heritage sound.

His latest album, “Pour Me Some Whiskey” is a testament to that. The album features songs exemplifying various sub-genres of blues. Songs like, “Wreck on You” a hard rocking in your face song that conjures up Johnny Cash meets Motörhead, “Chop You Up” a fast swinging jump blues, straight out of the West Coast tradition, “Don’t Worry Mama” a fan favorite inspired by Reverend Gary Davis, and “I Know You Love Me” a song out of the Memphis soul tradition.

While their sound is unique and appeals to all kinds of music lovers, their stage presence and energy is what brings audiences regularly to their feet. In addition to Ben’s virtuosic slide and fret work, Tommy’s wild stage antics create a spectacle as he, twirls, spins, stands on, and on occasion sets fire to his bass. Ryan is not to be left behind in showmanship, as he can be seen out front drumming on the strings of the bass while Tommy frets the notes.

The magnetizing energy of the Ben Rice Trio performances originates in the band’s love of playing music. This energy feeds the audience and elevates the overall live music experience. The band’s intermixture of musical styles ensures that each music set is interesting and engaging for listeners. The band takes great enjoyment in performing such a varied repertoire so fervently.

Tiller’s Folly, are the Pacific Northwest's critically acclaimed, internationally traveled, virtuosic ambassadors of song. For the past sixteen years, through 1,000's of performances stretching from the mists of the Pacific Northwest to the British Isles, they have spread their memorable blend of energy, history, musicality, romance and just plain fun from small and large halls to theatres and festivals. Hailed by critics (“Tiller’s Folly is a national treasure”. – Peter North, Edmonton Journal), their words and melodies are at once populist, minimally produced and poignant while at the same time singularly powerful and sincere.

With eight studio CD's to the bands credit, Tiller's award winning productions continue to expand and refine their potent mix of acoustic & electric based, Celtic influenced Canadiana, Americana, Newgrass 'and beyond.'

Fueled by their unfailing passion and enthusiasm for the music, Tiller’s is continuingly experimenting with different phrasing, tones and textures while recording with some of the most exciting and innovative musicians and singers in the business today as they continue to evolve as artists. Names like the phenomenally talented front man of the iconic group NewGrass Revival, John Cowan to Bob Babbitt (most famous for his work as a member of Motown Records studio band, the Funk Brothers, from 1966–1972, as well as his tenure as part of MFSB for Philadelphia International Records) and the late legendary session keyboardist Larry Knechtel have moved Tiller’s music to a new level of mastery.

In 2011 they released a new project marking a new beginning for the band. In addition to current members Bruce Coughlan, Nolan Murray and Laurence Knight they again showcase the vocals prowess of the masterful John Cowan, as well as introducing new musical collaborators like Josh Shilling (Mountain Heart) and Cia Cherryholmes (The Cherryholmes) along with the legendary Scottish Music Hall of Famer Phil Cunningham on accordion. Rounding out the musical guests on the album are guitarist Jeff Autry (John Cowan Band) and banjo great Scott Vestal (John Cowan Band/Sam Bush Band).

Tiller’s Folly is:

Bruce Coughlan (songwriter, lead vocals. Guitar, bodhran, flute, whistle)

Nolan Murray (fiddle, mandolin, mandocaster, banjo, viola, guitar)

Laurence Knight (producer, bass, vocals)

Led by guitarist Bobby Holland and featuring former world harmonica champion Jim McLaughlin, the band "Bobby Holland and the Breadline" features top notch musicianship, four part harmony and a catalog of excellent original material which they combine with their own unique intrepretations of blues standards.

In many ways, the band defies categorization as they move seamlessly from a standard like Muddy Waters "King Bee" to a rockin version of the Buck Owens classic "Hot Dog" and onto a bluesy take of Frank Zappa's "Cosmik Debris". Along the way they deliver first rate original material from the songwriting team of Bobby Holland and Rick Star.

A few weeks after Blues Cousins was awarded best band at the “Blues Sur Seine” festival in France beating out 57 other bands from all over the globe, their leader, Levan Lomidze (pictured), was given special commendation from the Moscow government.

In 2003, 04 and 05 the band made their first venture into the US with three big tours performing more than 70 gigs and taking part in 15 festivals in Washington , Idaho , Montana and other states.

They are the first Russian blues band to be recognized and in high demand in the US. And they're returning to the Northwest for another series of sold out shows including a special engagement at the Rockfish Grill.

Here's what people are saying:

"I am blown away. These guys rock. Really rock. Coolest rocking blues band I have heard in too many moons. I am in love. The guitar player in this trio is Levan Lomidze and he's the deal."
Craig Heimbigner. INSIDE BLUES 2004.vol.13

"The Blues Cousins, packing more firepower than a platoon of T-72 tanks, ripped it up as Friday's headliner. On the big stage these Moscow boys were larger than life and showed their world class skills at working the crowd. Killer show."
BLUES REVIEW June/July2004

"If you saw them last year, you know what's in store this weekend, when The Blues Cousins explode on stage with there 12- bar blues/rock, guaranteed to blow listeners away. Considered the hottest blues act in Russia, Blues Cousins features versatile lead guitarist /vocalist Levan Lomidze (among the top 10 most honored guitarists in Russian history) playing riffs reminiscent of Carlos Santana and Jimi Hendrix's."
