KEVIN SELFE AND THE TORNADOES

Kevin Selfe is a man who has dedicated his life to the blues. After graduating from North Carolina State University with a degree in Meteorology in 1995, Selfe felt like there was something missing. He decided to abandon a lucrative career as a weatherman, and pursue the music that consumed his soul: The blues.

In 1996 at the age of 22, he joined the regionally popular Fat Daddy Band based out of his hometown of Roanoke, VA. During his tenure with them, the Fat Daddy Band won the Charlotte Blues Society's 2001 Talent Competition and was a finalist at the Blues Foundation's 2002 International Blues Challenge in Memphis, TN, thus being named one of the top 6 unsigned blues bands in the world. After spending 7 busy years touring the South with the band and recording 3 CD’s, Kevin left Fat Daddy and joined forces with fellow Virginia bluesman Rodger Crowder, forming Little Rodger and the Cheap Thrills. Over the next 2 years Kevin continued touring, performing at some of the nation’s best blues clubs including: The Slippery Noodle -Indianapolis, IN; Bourbon Street Blues and Boogie Bar - Nashville, TN; The Double Door Inn - Charlotte, NC; J.M. Randall's - Williamsburg, VA; Midway Tavern - Mishawaka, IN; and Chip's Winder, GA; just to name a few.

In early 2005, Kevin decided it was time to go out on his own and formed his own group, Kevin Selfe and The Tornadoes. Since then, the band has quickly become known as one of the tightest and most energetic blues outfits around. In Sept 2005, he and the Tornadoes had the honor and pleasure of backing up Eddy "The Chief" Clearwater at the Taste of The Blue Ridge Blues Festival in Roanoke, VA.

In March 2006, Kevin competed against 27 guitarists and won Guitar Center’s King of The Blues Contest in Richmond, VA. Recently, Kevin backed up former Muddy Waters' sideman and harmonica legend, the late Carey Bell.

Always searching for the next adventure, Kevin relocated to Portland, OR in January 2007, where he looks to become part of a vibrant blues community and continue his lifelong passion of performing the blues. The band in Portland consists of Kevin on guitar, harmonica, and vocals, Don Shultz on drums, and Allen Markel on bass.

Kevin’s diverse style can best be described as a range of traditional Chicago blues ("nice Hubert Sumlin licks" - Bob Margolin) to powerful Texas Swing ("punishing guitar work a la Jimi meets Stevie Ray" - Ralph Berrier Jr., The Roanoke Times). Kevin Selfe & The Tornadoes released their CD entitled “Selfe-Contained” in January 2006. The recording consists of ten dynamic tunes and captures the band’s uncontainable energy and creativity. Although Kevin is best known for his guitar work, he has also become an accomplished harmonica player and vocalist. Blues Matters (UK) says of Selfe on the CD, “Playing fine harmonica as well, it is his superb deep voice that resonates throughout”.

PAUL GREEN and STRAIGHT SHOT

Paul Green's 35-year professional career began in New Jersey in 1968 with The Blackberry Booze Band. He also performed with other Jersey musicians including Bruce Springsteen, The E Street Band, Clarence Clemons and Little Steven Van Zandt.

Moving to Oakland, California, in 1975, Paul became a member of the house band at a popular blues spot, Eli's Mile High Club, performing there weekly and recording two albums with JJ Malone and Troyce Key. From 1975 to 1989 he performed throughout the Bay Area with his own band and other musicians, including Sonny Rhodes, Little Frankie Lee, JJ "Bad Boy" Jones, Cool Papa, Percy Mayfield, Lowell Fulson, Pee Wee Crayton, John Little John, and others.

In 1989 Paul relocated to Chicago where he continued to "cool himself" in the blues. He performed in such legendary Chicago blues clubs as Buddy Guy's, Rosa's, Kingston Mines, and Blues Etc., and shared the stage with such notables as Sugar Blue and Junior Wells.

Paul came to the Seattle area in 1991 and promptly won the Washington Blues Society award for "Best Blues Harmonica" in 1992. More recently, he won this award again in 2001, 2003 and 2004, and was also voted "Best Male Vocalist" in 2004.

Paul has recorded extensively with Dan Dean Productions for commercial and studio productions and has been performing locally in numerous venues with his hard-hitting Chicago-style electric blues quartet, Straight Shot.

FIRKIN FRIDAY EVERY WEEK

On Firkin Fridays, the Rockfish Grill offers cask conditioned versions of Anacortes ales. Cask conditioning is an English tradition that allows the beer to finish its fermentation in the barrel or "firkin" resulting in a character and complexity unique from any other beer. We'll offer a different variety every Friday served directly from the firkin with a traditional English hand pump. There's one batch a week and we pour till its gone, so get it while you can!

MARY McPAGE BAND

Mary McPage is one of the finest female Blues Singers in the Pacific Northwest. Influenced by country, rock and torch, McPage knows how to sell a song. Be it a standard or one of her original compositions, this sassy singer can take it from kitten to volcano and back again.

Mary found the blues after the breakup of her original-alternative band OZMOSiS. A short time afterwards she realized she never wanted to sing any other type of music. In 1999, she released an acoustic blues CD - In Dog Years, with the group BLUE HOO. The CD landed her an invitation to appear on the nationally syndicated public radio show, WoodSongs Old-Time Radio Hour. Taped live and broadcast out of Lexington, KY, her humor and original songs were a hit with the audience.

McPage is now standing tall and lookin’ fine, fronting her own band. And this band can fire it up and entertain all night long.
