MARY McPAGE BAND

Mary McPage is one of the finest female Blues Singers in the Pacific Northwest. Influenced by country, rock and torch, McPage knows how to sell a song. Be it a standard or one of her original compositions, this sassy singer can take it from kitten to volcano and back again.

Mary found the blues after the breakup of her original-alternative band OZMOSiS. A short time afterwards she realized she never wanted to sing any other type of music. In 1999, she released an acoustic blues CD - In Dog Years, with the group BLUE HOO. The CD landed her an invitation to appear on the nationally syndicated public radio show, WoodSongs Old-Time Radio Hour. Taped live and broadcast out of Lexington, KY, her humor and original songs were a hit with the audience.

McPage is now standing tall and lookin’ fine, fronting her own band. And this band can fire it up and entertain all night long.

ROCKIN' JAKE

Rockin' Jake has been hailed by many as one of the premier harmonica players in the country. His original sound is a hybrid of second line, swamp funk, blues and zydeco with influences from Paul Butterfield, Big Walter Horton, James Cotton, Muddy Waters, J. Geils Band, and the Fabulous Thunderbirds. Widely known as a touring juggernaut among his peers, his schedule of over 200 performances per year includes clubs, concert venues, and festivals.

Originally from the East Coast, Jake moved to New Orleans in 1990 where he began to work with such notable New Orleans mainstays as: blues diva Marva Wright, Mem Shannon, Coco Robicheaux, Little Freddie King, Tommy Ridgley, Eddie Bo and other local legends. During this time Jake also toured nationally with G. Love & Special Sauce, blues and pop legend Maria Muldaur as well as logging international miles with bluesman T.J, Wheeler. He was selected to perform in an all-star band featuring blues legends Pinetop Perkins and Hubert Sumlin at the Howlin' Wolf.

In 1995 he formed the Rockin' Jake Band as an outlet for his original music. A year later Jake recorded his debut CD, "Let's Go Get 'Em" on Rabadash Records which earned him national recognition. In 1999 Jake produced "Badmouth" on Zuluzu records followed by "Full-Time Work" in 2002. It included an all-star cast of musicians such as John Gros (Papa Grows Funk), Ron Johnson (Karl Denson's Tiny Universe), Bryan Stoltz (the funky Meters), Ben Ellman and Theryl "Houseman" de Clouet (Galactic). In the spring of 2004 he released his first live cd “5 p.m. Breakfast” on Zuluzu records recorded over a four day period at the Green Parrot in Key West.
He is a five-time winner of Off Beat Magazine's coveted “Best of the Beat” award for best harmonica player in New Orleans. Jake is truly a hard working musician with extraordinary talent. He and his band pour out their souls in every performance with high energy and electricity which consistently brings the audience to their feet.

In his spare time Jake managed to snare some culinary kudos in New Orleans, taking the trophy for "Best Barbequed Brisket" at the 1999 New Orleans Musicians Barbeque Competition, and launching his own line of signature hot sauce, "Badmouth". Jake also takes time to give back to his New Orleans community with Project Prodigy Music Camp for children as well as the Blues in the Schools programs in New Orleans and other cities in the US.

Rockin' Jakes appears 8:00 PM Thursday, July 10th. Cover is $8 @ the door.

KURT CRANDALL and TRUE STORIES

From the review of Kurt Crandall's latest disc:

Searching for the sound of the blues masters before him, Kurt Crandall dismissed newfangled technology and the digital wizardry of computers and instead recorded live in the studio to analog tape. The result is a disc that is contemporary in its themes but "old school" in its sounds and attitude. In addition to 8 cleverly crafted originals, Kurt pays homage to harmonica genius Little Walter, songwriter Smiley Lewis and the first Sonny Boy Williamson. With witty lyrics that evoke Rick Estrin's songwriting and harmonica playing that is eerily close to the late, great William Clarke, Kurt Crandall has joined the current crop of young harmonica players to be reckoned with on today's blues scene.

FIRKIN FRIDAY EVERY WEEK

On Firkin Fridays, the Rockfish Grill offers cask conditioned versions of Anacortes ales. Cask conditioning is an English tradition that allows the beer to finish its fermentation in the barrel or "firkin" resulting in a character and complexity unique from any other beer. We'll offer a different variety every Friday served directly from the firkin with a traditional English hand pump. There's one batch a week and we pour till its gone, so get it while you can!
