TONY FURTADO and MIA DYSON
Thursday, October 8, 2009

TONY FURTADO and MIA DYSON

It takes guts to start your album off with The Bawds of Euphony, an instrumental banjo tune that draws its cryptic title from the words of a Wallace Stevens poem. But Tony Furtado is a man unafraid to go with his heart when it comes to his music. Tony’s 14th album, entitled Deep Water, comes entirely from Tony’s heart. This CD is 100% Tony Furtado, from the cover art that he created, to the collection of 14 songs that he wrote and chose specifically for Deep Water. Here you will find tunes that embrace his love of slide guitar, his prowess as a banjo player, and his ability to write a song that elicits deep emotion. Produced by the fabulous (and slightly mad) Sean Slade (The Pixies, Radiohead, Dinosaur Jr., Dresden Dolls), Deep Water wanders through a wide array of sentiments.

By the age of 19, Furtado had earned himself a reputation as a young banjo prodigy, winning two National Bluegrass Banjo Championships. Despite the press and praise as one of the most promising bluegrass artists, Furtado decided that one genre wasn’t enough for him. Creatively, he had something more to express. “I don’t think I could ever be happy staying in any one place musically,” says Tony Furtado.

Next, Furtado picked up the slide guitar and soon established that his dexterity transitioned with ease. Using fingers and a bottleneck, it wasn’t long before Furtado began writing songs that had a folksier feel and featured himself as the vocalist. Previously he had released banjo albums that featured the vocals of talents such as Allison Krauss and Tim O’Brien. But Tony wanted to add singer to his songwriter and instrumental talents. And, in true Furtado fashion, he accomplished that as well.

From his teenage years until the present, Tony has wandered through genres and styles, never growing static and always evolving musically. He has toured tirelessly for over two decades and has garnered a great deal of respect from his peers, and has opened for and toured with acts such as Greg Allman, Susan Tedeschi, Taj Mahal, Leftover Salmon, Eric Johnson and he has shared the stage with the likes of Sonny Landreth, Keith Richards, David Lindley, Derek Trucks, Norah Jones, among many others. Like his vast catalogue of recordings, a Tony Furtado show has something to offer everyone. His music has taken him all over the country and into the hearts of many a music lover. Whether he’s playing with a band, or recording as a solo artist, his playing and considerable skills as a multi-instrumentalist and his strong songwriting prowess have led to him to be embraced on record and on stage.

Mia Dyson broke into the Australian music industry with success at radio and ARIA nominations (Grammy equivalent) for each of her three albums in the “Best Female Artist” winning an ARIA for “Best Blues & Roots Album” for her second release “Parking Lots”. Mia’s reputation for outstanding performances and brilliant musicianship garnered her national tours opening for iconic artists including, Eric Clapton, Bonnie Raitt, and Joe Cocker and has been featured at many major music events including Montreaux Jazz festival, Byron Bay Blues and Roots Festivals (Aus) Winnipeg Folk Festival (Canada) and WOMAD, Vancouver Island Folk Festival, Central Park NY Summer Stage w/Ani DiFranco and many more. Mia has done two North American tours playing from NYC to Los Angeles.

Loaded with deeply-felt, closely-milked ballads, Cold Water is a stark, soulful wonder, driven by Dyson’s husky temptress of a voice and her very spare, very bluesy guitar picking and strumming” (four stars) --Jeff Apter, Rolling Stone

She’s a guitarist, songwriter and singer, but it’s her voice - more guttural than just gravely, more touched than merely smoky - that is the showstopper. Skinny young white girls aren’t supposed to sound this big and soulful.” --Sydney Morning Herald (Australian Daily)

FIRKIN FRIDAYS

On Firkin Fridays, the Rockfish Grill offers cask conditioned versions of Anacortes ales. Cask conditioning is an English tradition that allows the beer to finish its fermentation in the barrel or "firkin" resulting in a character and complexity unique from any other beer. We'll offer a different variety every Friday served directly from the firkin with a traditional English hand pump. There's one batch a week and we pour till its gone, so get it while you can!

MARK DUFRESNE

MARK DUFRESNE

Mark DuFresne is one of the most sought after Blues talents in the Northwest. The Washington Blues Society has awarded him best vocalist, songwriter and harmonica more than any other artist.

He has recorded three CD’s of all original music. “Out of That Bed”, “Have Another Round” and “There’s A Song In There”, which featured the lineup of the former Hollywood Fats Band.

In 2002 Mark joined the coveted band “Roomful of Blues” as lead vocalist. While in that role the band received a Grammy nomination for “That’s Right”. They also won the W.C. Handy award for Best Band - 2004. The New England Blues monthly awarded him Best Blues Vocalist. He returned home to the Pacific Northwest in 2006 after a very successful four and a half years.

Recently he has had the pleasure to tour in Europe with Italy’s finest... Maurizio Pugno, guitar, Alberto Marsico, organ and bass, and Gio Rossi: excellent musicians, excellent pasta...

Duresne's work on the chromatic harmonica is considered as some of the most innovative in Blues music and his skill at circular breathing consistently leaves audiences amazed.

“DuFresne is as distinctive as a vocalist as he is a fiery player; rather than recycling old riffs, his original compositions are tuneful, melodic and grooveworthy..” - Blues Review Magazine....

MARY McPAGE BAND

MARY McPAGE BAND

Mary McPage is one of the finest female Blues Singers in the Pacific Northwest. Influenced by country, rock and torch, McPage knows how to sell a song. Be it a standard or one of her original compositions, this sassy singer can take it from kitten to volcano and back again.

Mary found the blues after the breakup of her original-alternative band OZMOSiS. A short time afterwards she realized she never wanted to sing any other type of music. In 1999, she released an acoustic blues CD - In Dog Years, with the group BLUE HOO. The CD landed her an invitation to appear on the nationally syndicated public radio show, WoodSongs Old-Time Radio Hour. Taped live and broadcast out of Lexington, KY, her humor and original songs were a hit with the audience.

McPage is now standing tall and lookin’ fine, fronting her own band. And this band can fire it up and entertain all night long.
