ANNA COOGAN and NORTH 19

ANNA COOGAN and NORTH 19

Seattle's Anna Coogan discovered the folk traditions of the American West after ending a ten-year relationship with opera in 2002. A few months after leaving the Mozarteum in Salzburg Austria, she took to writing songs to fill the resultant musical void. Described in the Portland, Oregon Willamette Weekly as "sweet and clear voiced with a stunning range," Anna fronts North19 with an honesty and courage that belies her petite stature.

North19 keeps an intense performing schedule in the area, playing venues from Portland to Vancouver, BC. In their time together, they have captivated audiences at the Seattle Folklife Festival, Portland's MusicFest NW, and numerous other festivals. They are continuing to build a regular following playing at venues throughout the region, with plans to tour other parts of the country in the near future.

Audiences have loved the blend of haunting ballads, original bluegrass, political folk tunes, and countrified pop songs. Their dedication to their craft, coupled with live performances at every opportunity, is rapidly establishing north19 as a presence in the NorthWest alt-country scene.

POLLY O'KEARY and the RHYTHM METHOD

POLLY O'KEARY and the RHYTHM METHOD

“GOOD GOLLY MISS POLLY YOU SURE CAN SING!!!” raved the Washington State Blues Society Bluesletter. And blues fans agreed, naming the 33-year-old bass playing diva the top female vocalist of 2003 and nominating her again in 2004 and 2005.

The lovely blues belter is backed by the Rhythm Method faeturing C.D. Woodbury on guitar, a veteran of the well-known blues scenes in the Portland and Austin areas, and drummer Les Merrihew who has played with everyone from Albert Collins to Pinetop Perkins.

The band recently completed the album “Gather ‘Round” under Grammy-award winning, multi-platinum producer Conrad Uno at Seattle 's legendary Egg Studio. The result is a sophisticated yet rootsy album that has become a DJ favorite on blues radio around the Pacific Northwest, including KISM in Bellingham and KSER in Seattle .

Yet as well-received as the album has been, it is the band's live performance that really knocks people out.

MARK HUMMEL, LEE OSKAR, JAMES HARMAN HARMONICA BLOWOUT
Friday, November 17, 2006

MARK HUMMEL, LEE OSKAR, JAMES HARMAN HARMONICA BLOWOUT

NOTE: Due to illness West Coast Blue legend, James Harman, will be taking the place of Johnny Dyer for this show.

Since 1991, Mark Hummel has been both producing & performing at his annual Blues Harmonica Blowout series. These shows have grown to be a much heralded event & continue to draw sellout crowds wherever they appear. The list of participants is a who's who of Blues harp history, James Cotton, Charlie Musselwhite, Norton Buffalo, Kim Wilson, Huey Lewis, Carey Bell, Billy Boy Arnold, Rod Piazza, Rick Estrin, Paul deLay, Snooky Pryor, James Harman, Gary Primich, Sam Myers, Magic Dick in just the last three years of this 11 year event.

Tonight's event will feature not only Mark, but also harp legends Johnny Dyer and Lee Oskar. Each harp master will blow on their own and then together, in a one-upsmanship festival. Hence, the Blowout!

Mark Hummel is a road warrior - a true Blues Survivor. Along the way, he has crafted his own trademark harmonica sound - a subtle combination of tone, phrasing and attack combined with a strong sense of swing. His albums, constant touring and appearances at the major blues festivals have firmly established his solid reputation around the US and Europe.

Johnny Dyer is one of those guys who is so steady and has been doing what he does for so long that he's sometimes overlooked. But don't take Johnny for granted - he's one of the truly great harp players of his generation, which is to say, the generation that came out of heyday of the blues harp. Born in Mississippi in 1938, and having spent some of his formative years on Stovall's Plantation in Muddy Water's hometown Rolling Fork, Johnny has the subtlety of phrasing and gently swinging chops that are at the core of all the great blues harp players. These elemental qualities were ingrained so early that they're completely automatic and natural in Johnny's playing, but often take later generations of harp players a lifetime of study to get a handle on - if they can grasp them at all. Add to that a voice as rich as Mississippi mud, and you've got a bluesman who is about as heavy as they come these days. Over the last decade he's released a series of well-received CDs on labels such as Black Top and Blind Pig, and his latest release on Storyville has garnered him a prestigious W.C. Handy Award nomination for "Blues Song Of The Year" for the title cut, "Hard Times Won". With the Mannish Boys (Who've rocked here at the Triple Door before!), he revisits the music of one his earliest and greatest inspirations, Chicago blues harp icon Little Walter. And when you think blues harmonica, you think Little Walter!

Lee Oskar was a charter member of War in the late '60s, when the West Coast group first backed Eric Burdon and later went out on their own. Hits like "Lowrider", "World Is A Ghetto", "Spill The Wine", "Me And Baby Brother", and "Slippin Into Darkness" were huge records that got national airplay coast to coast and stayed high up in the charts for months. His extended wailing solos became a vital part of War's funk/rock/Latin sound in the '70s and '80s. Oskar's unique approach to harmonica has earned him the distinction of being voted 1976's Instrumentalist Of The Year in three major music publications, Billboard, Cashbox and Record World. He made two fusion albums as a leader in the '80s and though he remained a part of War, Oskar made his solo debut in 1976 and recorded several albums of solid pop-jazz, R&B, and fusion, among them 1978's fine Before the Rain and 1980's My Road, Our Road. Lee went on to start the Lee Oskar Harmonica company in 1983, which is second only to Hohner Harmonicas in popularity and sales.

The show starts at 9 PM and cover is $15 at the door.

FIRKIN FRIDAYS

FIRKIN FRIDAYS

On Firkin Fridays, the Rockfish Grill offers cask conditioned versions of Anacortes ales. Cask conditioning is an English tradition that allows the beer to finish its fermentation in the barrel or "firkin" resulting in a character and complexity unique from any other beer. We'll offer a different variety every Friday served directly from the firkin with a traditional English hand pump. There's one batch a week and we pour till its gone, so get it while you can!
