GERTRUDE'S HEARSE

GERTRUDE'S HEARSE

Gertrude’s Hearse is a band hailing from La Conner, Washington. The band was formed atop the hill by bassist Stephen Starr and guitarist Raymond John adding Tim Saxton, Keith Stone, Matt Clausen and a plethora of other players to become one of the area’s hottest new bands. In short amount of time, they have built an outstanding repertoire of music ranging from folk, country and rock to bluegrass, R&B and punk. No one else has their style, their energy, or their theme.

Gertrude (grrr-trood) - An old-time name representing the style of music from which the band bases its sound. They are equally comfortable playing acoustically, around a single can microphone, or plugged into a PA on-stage. Versatility has been an important factor in their early success as a band.

Hearse (her-sss) - A car used to transport a coffin to a burial site. It is also a somewhat taboo word in the English language, not often used and retaining a sort of mystery. The name of the band is hard to get out of the heads of those who have said it aloud or read it in print.

The undertakers and country-rock-bluegrass-rockin-punk-folk singers gaining quite a reputation in the Pacific Northwest are commonly known as Gertrude’s Hearse. They are becoming legend, often imitated, and never reproduced. Mothers watch yer daughters, fathers git yer guns, brothers watch yer tounges and everyone git ready for a shin splittin’ good time when Gertrude’s Hearse rolls into town.

TERRY EVANS

TERRY EVANS

Terry Evans' musical journey began in Vicksburg, Mississippi where he was born in 1944. As a young man, he sang tenor, baritone and bass in the church choir while secretly listening to the likes of Elmore James, Little Walter and Albert King.

At the age of 22, Evans moved to Los Angeles where he sang in several South Central clubs including the Cotton Club and the Road Runner. It was here he hooked up with singing partner, Bobby King, and in 1976, the two joined Ry Cooder for Chicken Skin Music.

Both Evans and King have worked on several of Cooders albums over the years, including the current Chavez Ravine, and have toured extensively in Cooder's band. The two also teamed for a pair of well received solo albums.

As a solo artist, Evans has released several recordings including 2005's excellent, Fire in the Feeling. He has also recorded with some of the top people in the music business including Boz Skaggs, Maria Muldaur, John Lee Hooker and John Fogerty with whom he won a gold record for Eye of the Zombie.

On Fire in The Feeling, his voice is as rich as ever. On the Ry Cooder-penned “My Baby Joined the Army”, Evans emotes the pain of loss through his voice and guitar and captures the despair of Cooder’s lyrics. “Let’s Get Gone” and “Turn on Your Lovelight” are straight ahead groove-laced blues rockers and “I’ll Be Your Shelter (In the Time of Storm)” is a gospel-tinged track reminiscent of The Blind Boys of Alabama. The album was produced by Terry and Phil Bloch. Special guests include David Lindley, Jorge Calderon, and George Bohannon.

Ry Cooder has said that he always thought that his long time musical partner made a better "front man." You need only see a Terry Evans show to understand why. As a performer, he remains in constant demand, and as a recording artist, he is one of the most sought after singers in the business.

FIRKIN FRIDAY EVERY WEEK

On Firkin Fridays, the Rockfish Grill offers cask conditioned versions of Anacortes ales. Cask conditioning is an English tradition that allows the beer to finish its fermentation in the barrel or "firkin" resulting in a character and complexity unique from any other beer. We'll offer a different variety every Friday served directly from the firkin with a traditional English hand pump. There's one batch a week and we pour till its gone, so get it while you can!

MARK HUMMEL, JAMES HARMAN, LEE OSKAR HARMONICA BLOWOUT!
Saturday, November 24, 2007

MARK HUMMEL, JAMES HARMAN, LEE OSKAR HARMONICA BLOWOUT!

Since 1991, Mark Hummel has been both producing & performing at his annual Blues Harmonica Blowout series. These shows have grown to be a much heralded event & continue to draw sellout crowds wherever they appear. The list of participants is a who's who of Blues harp history, James Cotton, Charlie Musselwhite, Norton Buffalo, Kim Wilson, Huey Lewis, Carey Bell, Billy Boy Arnold, Rod Piazza, Rick Estrin, Paul deLay, Snooky Pryor, James Harman, Gary Primich, Sam Myers, Magic Dick in just the last three years of this 11 year event.

Tonight's event will feature not only Mark, but also harp legends James Harman and Lee Oskar. Each harp master will blow on their own and then together, in a one-upsmanship festival. Hence, the Blowout!

Mark Hummel is a road warrior - a true Blues Survivor. Along the way, he has crafted his own trademark harmonica sound - a subtle combination of tone, phrasing and attack combined with a strong sense of swing. His albums, constant touring and appearances at the major blues festivals have firmly established his solid reputation around the US and Europe.

James Harman was born and raised in Anniston, Alabama where he quickly picked up on the black blues and soul music being played on the radio in the Deep South. In the early 60's, Harman started playing juke joints and dance clubs throughout the South and recorded several 45's for obscure labels. In 1968 Harman made the move to Southern California, where he eventually became freinds with Canned Heat, The Blasters, Hollywood Fats (who played in Harman's band for quite a spell) and many other famous west coast blues musicians. Harman's music can be heard on labels like Enigma, Rhino, Black Top and Cannonball. Harman is a one of a kind showman, vocalist and harp player not to mention a charismatic frontman.

Lee Oskar was a charter member of War in the late '60s, when the West Coast group first backed Eric Burdon and later went out on their own. Hits like "Lowrider", "World Is A Ghetto", "Spill The Wine", "Me And Baby Brother", and "Slippin Into Darkness" were huge records that got national airplay coast to coast and stayed high up in the charts for months. His extended wailing solos became a vital part of War's funk/rock/Latin sound in the '70s and '80s. Oskar's unique approach to harmonica has earned him the distinction of being voted 1976's Instrumentalist Of The Year in three major music publications, Billboard, Cashbox and Record World. He made two fusion albums as a leader in the '80s and though he remained a part of War, Oskar made his solo debut in 1976 and recorded several albums of solid pop-jazz, R&B, and fusion, among them 1978's fine Before the Rain and 1980's My Road, Our Road. Lee went on to start the Lee Oskar Harmonica company in 1983, which is second only to Hohner Harmonicas in popularity and sales.

The show starts at 9 PM and cover is $20 at the door.
