MIA VERMILLION

MIA VERMILLION

Mia Vermillion’s emergence onto the blues scene caught the immediate attention of critics and others in the blues world. “Vermillion is a fresh and welcome arrival on the blues (and jazz) scene. The full depth of her talent has yet to be seen,” according to AllAboutJazz.com’s Michael Bailey. “She infuses her singing with more humidity than Ma Rainey and more sex than Lena Horn.”

After taking a hiatus to recover from an injury last year, Mia is back in full force in 2011 with performances at the largest blues festival on the west coast: the Safeway Waterfront Blues festival, and Seattle’s premier blues and jazz venue Jazz Alley opening for Grammy nominee and Blues Hall of Fame inductee John Hammond.

Mia has been influenced by the musical statements of Ann Wilson of Heart, Lil Green, Billie Holiday, Rickie Lee Jones and the like. After playing and writing her own music on the outskirts of the evolving Seattle music scene during her youth, she moved to California as a young adult to further pursue her music. Life choices brought her to pursuing an undergraduate degree in Vocal Performance from the University of Idaho, home to the Lionel Hampton School of Music. Mia devoted time to raising children and running her own music and recording studio, all the while continuing to write music and refine her own unique style of sensuous, earthy blues and jazz. In 2009, Mia entered the studio to create the album she had always envisioned: Alone Together With the Blues.

While performing primarily as a solo act with her guitar, Mia sought out and began to work with some of the Seattle’s best musicians. She focused on working with musicians who matched her own acoustic style and rhythms: a sensuous melded blend of acoustic blues, folk and jazz. Mia and guitar/dobro master Orville Johnson won the Washington Blues Society’s blues challenge in the Solo/Duo category allowing them to represent the Society at the Blues Foundation’s 26th International Blues Challenge in Memphis, Tennessee. Her music choices feature songs from blues and early jazz artists such as Ma Rainy, Lil Green, Mary Ann Williams, Big Bill Broonzy, Cecil Gant, Billy Holiday to list just a few. Mia adds her own compositions to musical sets in a perfect balance to the blend and style of music.

Mia released her self-produced, debut album Alone Together With the Blues in June 2009. The record gained national attention making the Roots Music Report blues radio chart top 50 for two weeks at #45 and #46, as well as reaching #2 on XM Radio B.B. King’s Bluesville’s ‘Picks to Click’ with her recording of ‘I’m Going to Copyright Your Kisses.’ “This album is a well-thought, well-planned, economical, and astronomical first release for this artist… She’s got a magnificent voice that is on par with any ladies I’ve heard today,” stated blues critic Ben Cox in Blues Blast Magazine.

Mia has been recognized for her vocals and works in composition and songwriting and is a showcased singer/songwriter of the blues. She has performed for audiences throughout the Northwest at different venues and festivals as well as in Beijing, China as part of a cultural exchange with musicians from around the globe. She has been very active with her music in women’s causes and served as Vice President of Skagit Habitat for Humanity Women’s’ Build. Mia has been able to use her talents in aiding to raise funds for those women who are ‘heads of households’ and that qualify for Habitat home construction.

“My songs and song choices come from my personal knowledge and life’s experiences, the joy of music and life, and the huge satisfaction of recognizing and providing feminine value and perspective in it all,” says Mia. “I approached making my first album as a way for me to open myself up to possibilities.”

BLUES PLAYGROUND

BLUES PLAYGROUND

BLUES PLAYGROUND plays “North Sound” blues. That’s a combination of Chicago and Texas blues with a dash of funk and soul topped off with some British blues. Whether they’re playin’ their own songs, or standards that you love, you will NOT be able to sit still!

Started by Northwest music veterans Sean Denton and Jeff Nicely, the idea for Blues Playground was born out of an impromptu acoustic gig. This led to a house band gig at a local night spot.

“We need a band” Sean said to Jeff.
“Yes we do” said Jeff.

So they got Richard Williams and
Jimmy Culler and then they had a band.
.
“Let’s go play” said Jeff.

“Yes, let’s go play” said Sean.

And they did.

When Sean was in the 8th grade, his brother took him to a Paul Butterfield concert and his fate was sealed. Sean has played in Northwest bands since the early ‘70s. He has survived hard rock, disco, new wave and grunge and emerged scarred but stronger to return to his roots. He has 2 cds from a previous project that showcase his exceptional songwriting abilities as well as his vocal and guitar work. Come see the band live to catch some of his innovative slide work. Not just the same old “Dust My Broom”.

Jeff brings over 30 years of lively performance experience to the stage. He captures the true rhythm and soul of the blues with his harmonica and contributes passionate percussion and vocal parts. Influenced early by his own family of musicians and their record collections, Jeff is an accomplished player of jazz, rock, gospel, folk, country, bluegrass and more. He’s performed with some of the best during his harmonica travels, from tight funk ‘n soul shows to loose pickin’ parties.

When he was 5, Richard played electric guitar for “show and tell” at school and was kissed by a girl shortly after. “King Richard” sits on the drum throne in the Playground, but he is also an accomplished guitar player, singer and recording engineer at his own Plum Tree Studio.

“Five String” Jimmy likes to hang glide for fun and then takes his life in his own hands on the Blues Playground. His bass playing and singing are an important element on the Playground and he’s always ready with a joke, usually one we can’t share with the audience.

KIM FIELD and the MIGHTY TITANS of TONE

KIM FIELD and the MIGHTY TITANS of TONE

The Mighty Titans of Tone is one of the hottest blues acts on the Northwest scene. They are fronted by internationally celebrated harmonica player and singer Kim Field.

Field began his musical career in New York, where he worked with the Sting Rays, a group managed by future Grammy winner Phil Schaap. Returning to his hometown of Seattle, he teamed up with Isaac Scott, appearing on two albums with the legendary guitarist. Field spent several years fronting the Slamhound Hunters, whose performances and two albums for Satin Records, 4/1 Mind and Private Jungle, were strongly received in both Europe and the United States.

Over the years Field has appeared on bills with such rhythm and blues legends as Muddy Waters, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Robert Cray, the Fabulous Thunderbirds, Gregg Allman, James Cotton, Otis Rush, John Lee Hooker, Albert Collins, the Righteous Brothers, Walter Horton, and Big Mama Thornton. He has appeared at the San Francisco Blues Festival, performed on New Year’s Eve in New York City’s Central Park, and was a featured performer at Seattle's Bumbershoot Festival seven years running. Field’s songwriting has been highlighted in the soundtracks of two feature films, The Killoff and The Lawless Land.

For the Mighty Titans of Tone, Field has assembled an all-star quartet of the Northwest’s premier musicians:

Guitarist Steve Yonck has developed a sizeable fan following through his work with the Hudson Blues Band and Harmonica Playboy and the Midnight Movers.

Bassist Brady Millard-Kish has worked locally with the Hudson Blues Band and the Jet City Fliers and performed and recorded with members of G. Love and Special Sauce, Soul Asylum, and the Neville Brothers.

Talented guitar slinger and singer, Eric Daw, has fronted his own band, Eddie and the Rockets, and supported Henry Cooper, Harmonica Playboy and the Midnight Movers, and the Hudson Blues Band.

The band’s backbone, drummer and vocalist Billy Spaulding, has been the rhythmic linchpin for Sweet Talkin’ Jones, Hugh’s Blues, and the Seattle Slim Band.

Unsurpassed musical chops, a dynamic stage act, and a unique repertoire of original tunes and the best that the blues and R&B have to offer—that is Kim Field and the Mighty Titans of Tone.
